Since their inception in 1973 with just two categories (Best Performance in a Musical and Best Performance in a Play), the Georgy Awards have grown significantly over the past 50 years. The awards now recognise a wide range of technical and creative achievements. In 1985, the Junior Awards were introduced and have also expanded to include more categories. In 2025, both the Junior and Senior categories will introduce the Best Ensemble award for plays and musicals.
In 2024 the Georgy Award Committee created publicly available judging guides.
